Where to Start
When looking for new countertops there are many things to consider. From materials to finishes the more prepared you are the easier the process becomes and the better the end result.

Before starting the process its best to familiarize yourself with the choices you will have regarding the finished product.

1. Measure and sketch the countertops you would like replaced or installed. Will you want a backsplash? Bathrooms typically have splashes up to 4" tall while kitchen splashes often go all the way up to the bottom of the cabinetry and hood fan.

2. Consider the edge type and thickness. Older cabinets sometimes require a thicker edge to fall below the the top of the cabinet while newer cabinets allow for the counters to rest on top. Most countertops have an eased edge however we can apply many other edge types. Most kitchens have 3cm (1.25" thick) counters however for smaller spaces and modern appearances 2cm (.75" thick) countertops are quite common. In addition to that you may choose to have mitred edges that are 3" or more in thickness to suite the style and look you desire.

3. Features such as waterfalls, overhangs, illuminated quartz, undermount lighting and engraved drying racks are just some of the additional finishes you may want to explore. Overhangs are usually up to 12" past the cabinets and waterfalls are an eye catching feature, ideal for islands that face a great rooms or entertaining area.

4. Will you require removal and disposal of your current counters?

5. Will you need a new sink, faucet or other finishes? We can include all of these finishes with the counters and mount the sinks as part of our service. To view a complete list of sinks and finishes you may visit Pearl Sinks. The benefit to you is that we can order the sinks directly to our shop for cutouts and have them delivered to your home during the installation, no need to store a bulky sink in your home. You'll also benefit from our preferred customer pricing.

6. If you're only planning on replacing a kitchen counter, are there any other counters you may want to update. It's often cost effective to update a bathroom at the same time, especially if there's enough material left after the primary area(s) are accounted for.

7. Materials. Quartz is a non porous surface that does not require additional treatment for food preparation. Granite and Quartzite are hard natural stones that do require sealing and periodic resealing but are suitable for kitchens, outdoor bbq's and other high use areas. Marble on the other hand is a much softer stone that is best used for light use counters such as bathrooms, wall and fireplace applications.

Quartz and natural stone come in 2cm and 3cm thicknesses, both polished and matte finishes and many different colours and patterns. Before going to look at samples you may want to scroll to the bottom of our site to find links to our suppliers and see what styles you find most appealing.
